Preparation step 9 actually has the clout to be the number 10 step because of its importance. For now, it is tied with number 10 due to the fact that the last topic is the most lengthy. That being said, water is one of the MOST essential elements to preparedness.
We’ve been used to turning on the faucet and getting water when we need it. We are accustomed to washing clothes and dishes at virtually a push of a button or two. What a blessing indoor plumbing is…but how do you prepare to be without it?
Here are some ideas and options:
- Store water for flushing and bathing in any container – it need not be food grade – for virtually any length of time. Here are a couple of ideal containers: http://www.areyouprepared.com/5-Gallon-Sampson-Stacker-Vent-Blue-Water-Jug-p/8302.htm & Click=278
- Store drinking water in smaller, yet rotating amounts (so that it is fresh) and in food grade (preferably glass or stainless steal) containers. Remember to rotate and keep it fresh though.
- Purchase a water purifying system so contaminated water can be converted to drinking water. Here is a page of options for filtering (not always the same as purifying, read carefully):
- An other options for purifying contaminated water are small doses of bleach or iodine (but be VERY careful as these are toxic if over used or worthless if too little is used per volume of water).
- The best choice is to purchase some easily pre-measured purification tablets. Here is a GREAT example of easily accessible purifying methods: http://www.areyouprepared.com/Drinking-Water-s/97.htm&

- Find a water SOURCE. A river, stream, lake, creek or spring. Know where this is and how to access it safely in case of emergency.
- Last but far from least, consider buying storable water. The following link has water boxes that can be stored for up to 5 years!
Remember, we humans and our animals can go without food for around one month without much damage, but no one can live more than a week without water.
